West Fork Complex Fire

The fire on the upper Rio Grande began on June 20, 2013 at Papoose Creek. On June 21st the fire had exploded into the Little Squaw Creek and then moved towards the River Hill and Thirty Mile Campground area. On June 21, 2013 the Reservoir crew and surveyor were sent out at approximately 1:00 p.m. Contractor Brad Moore, Caretaker Kim Wintz and I moved all of the equipment up river to the Ute Creek area to safety. The Hinsdale County Sheriff's Office began evacuating everyone from the Forest Road 520 and upper river area. The fire moved down the Little Squaw Creek to the river and burned down River Hill to the Box Canyon. For the next five days, the fire continued down river into the Texas Creek and Fern Creek area and then continued into the Trout Creek Drainage.

West Fork Complex Fire

Light rains in the Papoose and West Fork Fire areas have helped control this fire of over 100,000 acres.

Brad Moore and I worked closely with the Hinsdale County Sheriff and the U.S. Forest Supervisor to have access to the Reservoir for daily gate adjustments and to continue the Clay Liner Project as soon as possible; construction resumed on June 26.
